St. Elizabeth Hospital (SEHI) proudly marks a groundbreaking achievement as it successfully performed two Awake Craniectomy procedures, a first and only in Region 12, setting a new benchmark in neurosurgical excellence and patient-centered care.
The pioneering surgeries were carried out on patients aged 29 and 61, who were both diagnosed with complex brain conditions requiring the delicate removal of tumors while preserving vital neurological functions. Leading the procedures were SEHI’s distinguished neurosurgeon, Dr. Manilyn Ann Hong, together with Thoracic, and Cardiovascular Anesthesiologist, Dr. Ralph Philip Anislag, Dr. Mark Lowell Ang, Cebu’s Neuroanesthesiologist, and a dedicated team of highly skilled nurses and allied health professionals who ensured the safety, comfort, and holistic care of the patients throughout the surgeries.
Unlike traditional brain surgeries under general anesthesia, Awake Craniectomy allows patients to remain conscious during the operation. This innovative approach enables surgeons to directly monitor brain functions in real time such as speech, movement, and memory, ensuring that critical areas of the brain remain unharmed. This translates to safer procedures, faster recovery, and better overall outcomes for patients.
This milestone represents not only a major advancement in neurosurgical capability in our region but also a beacon of hope for patients with life- threatening brain conditions who previously had to seek care far from home.
By bringing this highly specialized service closer to our community, we affirm our commitment to clinical excellence, innovation and saving lives.
